Gunmaker, just a quick question on top three photographs. The five ducks on the left are mallard drakes; no problem there, but what species is the one on the far right? Is that a Black Duck? Lagopus.....

It's a Gadwall, also called "Gray Duck" in the south.

Medium/small sized dabbler.
Have a very pretty herringbone pattern on the breast.

If you'd like to waterfowl on the "Great Lakes" sometime, just pm me.

Gadwall, yes, I just didn't quite get it from the picture. We get them in the U.K. but not too common when the season starts as they tend to go south. I saw some in the Netherlands when last there but it is one species I have never had the chance to shoot.

ClapperZapper, I would love to but doubt I would ever get over there. Thanks so much for the offer though. Lagopus.....

Get to Detroit and buy a license, I can cover everything else.

Manchester to DTW is about $700.00 US so maybe 500lbs all in.

My luck with Gadwalls as eating ducks has not been great. Locally they seem to be fond of duckweed, which is a floating pond-weed with a peculiar taste...Geo

I can't think of many better ways to spend a day.

Gadwalls are exceedingly stupid as dabbing ducks go. If it weren't for Gadwalls some of us would get no ducks at all.

Duck hunting. I hate wading around putting out decoys in the dark. I hate being wet and cold. I hate falling into the water. I hate getting rained on. I hate being so cold I don't dare touch the metal boat sides. I hate losing stuff. I hate smelling the dog farts. I hate some knot head nearly blowing my ears out with his short barreled, ventilated shotgun. I hate the guy that won't stop calling after the ducks have turned inbound.

But most of all I hate not doing it.
