understand some short chambered guns may not pattern as well with 2 3/4" shells...
also, understand felt recoil is sometimes higher if 2 3/4" shells are used in short chambered guns...
keep it simple and keep it safe...

I'm surprised that after three pages no one said not to remove metal where it's most needed. I may be wrong, but believe Sherman Bell did some testing and found pressure only went up about 500psi when shooting 2 3/4 in a 2 1/2" 12ga. Because I reload at lower pressures I've never worried about chamber lengths. The OP never came back and said if he reloads. The pressure increase depended on the specific load. Although most were under 1,000 psi, a couple were pretty close and one exceeded 1,000 psi. Certainly doable to compensate for those increases, especially in 12ga.

I don't think Ithaca changed the barrel contour at all when they went from 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 chambers. Nitro Specials are solid guns with good metals so I see no problems with changing the barrels from 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 but not the 3".
When was the last time you ever saw a NS barrel fail? I never have. Seen several Smiths, Fox and a Remington.

How times change.
Twenty years ago chamber lengthening was all the rage, forcing cones too.
Ten years ago everyone would have come down on the side of don't take away metal, use the right 2-1/2" shells.
Now chamber lengthening seems to have come back into fashion.
Like skirt length.
Keep it as as, shoot the shells it was made for.
My problem lies in reconciling my gross habits with my net income.

Get someone with a wall thickness gauge to measure the thickness over the chamber end, then figure the diameter of the outside of the chamber. Figure the same thing 1/4 IN. farther down and ask whoever is going to rechamber it if that is enough. You could also lengthen the forcing cones.

I would tend to agree with KY Jon, I seriously doubt if a thing was changed other than chamber length when they began chambering the 2 3/4" shells. This would tend to tell one that Ithaca did not see a problem with going to the longer chamber.
Of course I could be wrong, just as I was on frame sizes.

KY Jon, sounds like you've seen at least four different barrels fail from three different makers. Perhaps you'd like to share what you've witnessed. Did anyone know why ? Barrels plugged, honed too thin, or overloads ? I'm really quite interested.
