I have an old double with a gold shield on the stock. On the shield is a gents name (P. Kriebel) and home city (Conshohocken, Pa.). What is the website that you can look up see if someone is in the sporting papers from the turn of the century?

la84 has some Kriebels, more than one in PA, but the initials are wrong. No one named Kriebel registered ATA or Interstate Association birds in 1913, 1914, 1915, or 1917. 1913 is the earliest average book to research.

That is exactly what I was after. Thank you. It is really interesting to read about some shoots that a double you own was more than likely used in over a century ago.

OK- Dean- as I can't figure out your "e-mail thingy" and it won't pop up on my Dell screen, no matter how many times I try-run this baby for me pls- name on brass plate on a solid mahogany shotgun trunk case, made for two sets of barrels- maker unknown- But the previous owner is/was:-- C.J. Backstrand 1267 Wheatland Ave. Lancaster, PA-- (no zip code listed- possibly pre-1963 era.??-- Just curious as what you might turn up.
That exact name- as C. J. BACKSTRAND is also engraved on the right top barrel breech of the 32" VR Nitro steel ejector barrels R frame, and marked for 3" chambers with reinforcing yoke on bottom rib- so I am guessing that when Mr. Backstrand sent his Grade 3E back to Fulton for the second barrel set (both the barrel lug area (flat) and forearm iron are stamped (2) to indicate this, he also ordered his initials and surname engraved on the barrels. Again, my guess, but if he was either/or a live bird shooter or a doubles trap shooter, he wanted this to denote his ownership of this fine 3E in the gun rack at his club(s)--

A long shot, but perhaps Conshohocken has or had a Sportsman's Club you could inquire to. Just a thought.
I prefer wood to plastic, leather to nylon, waxed cotton to Gore-Tex, and split bamboo to graphite.

Great provenance on your gun, Foxy. C.J. was president of Armstrong Cork, a pretty good job. Google is full of info on Armstrong Cork and the owner of your gun. Congratulations. I would imagine that the LCSCA would have information on such a great gun.

Thank you, Bill. I have just mailed a letter regarding this 12 3E Smith to the treasurer of the LCSCA- I have the Cody paperwork, from the Las Vegas Gun Show, where it was offered for sale in Jan 2013- by a Mr. Dan Bullock. a member of that group apparently- He had it on display Section E Row C table no. 8- how it got from "Lost Wages" to the GM outlet store in Grandville, MI is anybody's guess. Mr. Bullock has a listed phone number on the Cody "Show Search Form" that came with this gun in the fitted case, the area code is 307-- possibly he lives in the area/
Also, Lancaster PA- Amish Country- just SW of Philly, but not on the "Old Main Line". I believe this was farm area outside Philly portrayed in the Harrison Ford movie "Witness"?? I wonder if Mr. Backstrand had an Amish cabinet maker craft this handmade two barrel compartmented and lined mahogany case for him- to fit this 3E- very good craftsmanship indeed.
This to me anyway, is one of the salient aspects of collecting and shooting older graded American side-by-side shotguns, is it not? Thanks for your reply- RWTF
