I would stay away from standard US 16ga ammo. The gun is OK in terms of chamber length, so there's no issue with additional pressure due to a longer shell in a shorter chamber. However, the pressures developed by US factory ammo are a good bit higher than the loads for which this gun was built. There's also the issue of heavy loads such as the 1 1/4 oz 16ga "magnum", which would almost certainly be bad for the wood on a gun of this vintage.

If one is into reloading, standard American hulls loaded to lower pressures should be fine. Factory shells from American specialty outfits like RST and Polywad would work well, as would European factory shells.

Yes, I think we can add lower grade Pieper ejector with cocking indicators as possible replacement for L.C.Smith in "Need a better classic" thread. While the one shown above is higher grade gun I would think $1500 would get Burch something less fancy but still nice from this maker. The basic extractor gun with blued receiver in top shape cost only $500+tax.

Raimey, that action belonged to me until last month and there is a photo of the completed gun earlier in this thread.

Raimey, no idea what it's called, never seen anything like it by another maker and the same can be said for every gunsmith I have ever showed them to.

The top lever spindle, as it is moved to the right to open the gun, pulls back a rib extension that fits into a slot on the barrels. When closed the real top rib and the rib extension meet a tight fit about a quarter inch towards the muzzle from the breech end of the barrels.

I don't know enough to describe the inner workings of it but I do know the design results in the wood of the horns being extremely thin and prone to cracking at the lower edge of the receiver's rearward extension.

If you look at the pics of the Russian example you posted, you can see the crack. Mine cracked in the exact same spot on both sides. I have similar actioned Piepers that don't have the rearward extension of the receiver and while the wood is also thin, they don't seem to crack as easily.
