If going the lacquer route over engraving on actions, first enhance the engraving with India Ink (or lampblack, etc.), then lacquer, then apply wax.

If you renew the wax a little at each cleaning, (whole gun) it's a great way of protecting things.

I prefer wood to plastic, leather to nylon, waxed cotton to Gore-Tex, and split bamboo to graphite.
