Wax over lacquer works really well. I use Renaissance Wax. It has no abrasives and is fairly clear. Good for barrels and actions. I use JPW for the wood.

It's easier to touch up the wax after each use so the lacquer lasts longer, but almost all car type waxes have abrasives in them.

I prefer wood to plastic, leather to nylon, waxed cotton to Gore-Tex, and split bamboo to graphite.

I have also just started using Renaissance and it is really an amazing product. A little goes a long way and it really does look great dried and buffed. I think it especially looks good on old gunstocks with battle scars.

Renaissance wax has become my favorite since I started using it several years ago, especially gunstocks. I've used Cleansoil on the metal, but I'm going to try the wax next time per the suggestions.

Renaissance Wax brand is my go to wax anymore. It was developed for protection of museum items of all kinds. I mix a very small amount of lamp black into it for engraving as it adds contract and brings out the engraving.

If going the lacquer route over engraving on actions, first enhance the engraving with India Ink (or lampblack, etc.), then lacquer, then apply wax.

If you renew the wax a little at each cleaning, (whole gun) it's a great way of protecting things.
