If Cuba is all that wonderful I wonder how come Fidel and Raul didn't foster a free and independent press to report all the great stuff going on. You would think they would welcome independent journalists to validate all their magnificent accomplishments in education and health care. I mean, what would have been the drawback for them to have had independent newspapers telling the world about the great socialist miracle they had wrought?

The way the Castro brothers did it every time someone like you starts touting the accomplishments of their dictatorship someone one like me simply points out that there is no independent press in Cuba and so all the newspapermen are government employees. And so all the data and anecdotal stories put out by that press are just government propaganda.

I am glad to be here.

treblig, I have asked those who fled, before and after many of them left Florida to win their country back on brutal dictator Batista terms at the Bay of Pigs. They liked the old way of doing things and were willing to die for privilege.

I saw first-hand health and education, before and after. Nova Scotia is blessed to have Cuban doctors practising here on contract, particularly for preferring generic medications that do the same as prohibitively expensive ones.

I have friends who received health treatments while vacationing in Cuba. I used their services myself during and after the revolution and 10 months ago. I was treated as Cubans, no privileges and had nothing to complain about.

I met Cubans who stayed in the country and many who went overseas to work and return, mostly for family reasons. Cubans hold no animosity toward Americans, the most astonishing mark to me of their character.

The young are open and know what's going on in the world, their popular interest the United States. What will happen after Obama? Open and accountable in the way they responded to my inquiries.

Nancy and I roamed freely and once took a guided tour. The guide was a little off on a couple things, dates mostly so I corrected her. Smiling, the young woman said, "The Canadian knows Cuba, I'm now turning the tour over to him"---and she did.

King, are you talking about Obama again?....

I think he is. Thanks to on the job training, he fundamentally changed the country through the lens of high mileage low rent golf. I weep for big tobacco. The eight year moratorium on bashing from the left is near over, no more sneaking out back for cig breaks by the poser in chief. I feel healthier and smarter like mi amigos en cuba.

Castro as other leaders knew the value of propaganda. Once his 80 riflemen made it into the Sierra Maestra, he set up a radio station. The West, as much or more than the other side, has made propaganda a science as the leading consumer society, in our faces every day whether it's shoes or Castro.

Who was yelling the most of rigged elections, devious and dishonest "mainstream media"? Media now is publicly broadcasting its partisanship from not doing its legwork, going along and piling on when it sensed blood, as it always has and I said here several times. Please name one independent US newspaper.

Independently owned, yes; none without bias because perfect balance is inimical to our natures.

Cuban doctors in Nova Scotia? I figured it was bad in Cuba, but not THAT bad!

I'll bet Fidel never had to step outside and hotbox a Lucky in the cold like an animal with the rest of us schnooks when he wanted a smoke. Man of the people my arse.

Ah, the ole overhand right for progress, and left hook to the groin for the elections. If only we could reach out to the youth and get 'em before they realize they have to get a job, maybe we can teach them how to apply for food stamps online. Dreaming big from the stagnant water hazard on the back nine. Where's my caddy, hill, drop a new ball up on the fairway, we ain't drain'in the swamp.

Yep, I am talking about Obama and all the rest. Fiat's greatest proponent in modern times---for the good---was FDR with all his sweet-talk, jiggery pokery and arm-twisting to get his peoples' head out of the sand and go to war.

craig, with split in US sentiment, the left will be moaning as much as the right, their parties torn in twain, neither knowing what's coming from their declared wrecker-in-chief. Portents same for US and forum. Bashing's not "near over."

I remember seeing a documentary regarding his takeover. One of the first thing he did was kick his mother out of the family plantation and turn it over to the "people". The glare on his mother's face told it all. Then there was the film of the firing squads as he lined up and had shot the "loyal opposition" against the wall. I have heard accounts of the health care being top notch. A buddy, a well-established third generation physician from a family of physicians, was dying of cancer. He never made the trip to Cuba, but he was willing and wanting to go. He never made it.
"C" cut him short.

Opposite experience King, for my wife and her family concerning your wonderful Cuban Doctors, at least with one Cuban doctor.

My wife being from Nicaragua flew there this past July, along with her siblings, to attend to her mother who had a stroke and would eventually die about two weeks after the stroke.

There was a Cuban Doctor who came into the house to attend to their mother. They ended up sending him off with instructions not to come back, due to his uncaring attitude and lack of what they felt was forthcoming information.

Again, my wife, spent a good share of her day yesterday communicating with numerous Cuban friends, U.S. citizens all, who in one manner or another escaped the hell hole Cuba was under Castro, and every single one was glad that he passed and had absolutely nothing good to say about him!

Interesting how those with actual living experience under the Castro dictatorship and have escaped, have nothing good to say about him, yet one who has had minimal contact/experience with Cuba continues to defend the Castro regime ad nauseum!

lonesome, big guys of money and influence never do as "us schnooks," perks of the job. A difference from later elites who got spurious deferments while the schnooks did the dying is that Castro led his handful of patriots from Playa Colorados to Havana against an army of 24,000. Improvements for Cuba far surpasses what any other Western leader has done in the past 60 years or more, and world-wide with less loss of blood.
