Gunter Pfrommer received my Ed. Kettner 16 Ga hammer SxS and he sent me some pics of the locks and the stock, after he took it apart for a strip and clean. He agrees, it is a high quality hammer gun. Let me know what you think of the inside of the locks and the stock. Does your hammer J. P. Sauer and/or Kettner hammer gun has the same type of locks? The horn trigger guard was cracked and needs repair, however I knew that when I bid on the gun.Your thoughts are always appreciated. BillK

BillK,
It won't be easy, but the triggerguard can be repaired so the break can't be seen. I'm sure you will be happy with it, when it is finished.

Thank you Mike. Gunter said he could fix it. I have faith on him.
The good news is that no amateur smith has messed with the gun since it was made, as evidenced by the condition of the screws and the stock inletting.

Gunter has done some work for me in the past, he's very good and works on some very high end stuff, you should be in good hands.

I have a JP Sauer hammerless sidelock from 1894 that looks like it may have the same engraving pattern from what I can see of the bottom of the frame. Do you have any pics of the outside of the locks?

Hi RAS.
Check the 2 links below of my original posts in this forum a few weeks ago regarding my J.P. Sauer/Ed. Kettner gun with lots of pics. I would love to see pics of your Sauer. Thank you & happy Thanksgiving. BillK

Bill - Mine has a similar leaf pattern, but no game scenes. Damascus barrels and black powder proofed only, although in takes lite pressure nitro loads no problem. Good luck with the restoration, and Happy Thanksgiving! Russ [img] [/img]

Not absolutely certain on this, but as I recall Nitro Proof became mandatory in Germany in 1912. The vast majority of pre 1912 German built guns were not Nitro Proofed as a quirk in the proof laws actually submitted them to undue pressures so most makers opted not to have it done. The few that did normally stipulated a very light service load for the benefit of proofing.
My understanding is that the then current proof laws required the same proportionate increase of the powder charge for Smokeless as it did for Black.
When you start increasing the charge weight pressures rise much faster with Smokeless than with Black.
