Lovely sleuthing in the bowels of the BBS. Yes, Sauer Modell Nr. V and not III. I'm sure the effort on both were completed by the same mechanics. Sauer & the Boys Kettner were real chummy and I'm not sure if it was due to Sauer being mechanized & could fill most orders or if there was some family sourcing relationship.

Regarding value, sure from a purist's point of view for the seldom seen Modell V, yeah it would decrease in value but if the original tubeset has been compromised, then the longarm could only have been brought forward by pairing the frame w/ a fluid steel tubeset counter part. Few would every know that the original tubeset is absent & that's how it has gotten this far. One has the best of both world's being the original frame w/ superior quality & components and a fluid steel counterpart for the tubeset, less Sauer's shooting performance. Maybe for an optimum condition, Kettner should have sourced Sauer for the additional tubeset?

That is a Sauer horn buttplate of a Wildmann w/ a Staff, if I'm not mistaken.

The mystery continues...
I noticed some faint writing on the top lever and after cleaning it up a bit, you can see the following in the pic below (ED. KETTNER COLN) in gold lettering. What do you think of that? BillK

I think the name to be typical for Ed. Kettner's offerings in Köln for the period & it may be that a craftsman @ Sauer applied it. Sauer & Sohn Nr. 34521 as found in Cate's text is similar in adornment. Again, during this period Ed. Kettner heavily sourced Sauer & may have performed some tasks in-house like adding a new tubeset, etc. after sourcing it from Suhl.

There are few choices for Suhl mechanics that had the initials RM:
Ernst Richard Meffert
Rudolf Möhring
Robert Müller

I'd hedge my bets on Ernst Richard Meffert. As an aside for those hardcore initials folk, barrel smith Casper Schlegelmilch hung out his shingle in 1818 & continued thru several generations and there was a descendent named Caspar Schlegelmilch in the early 1900s and he passed the torch to Hermann Schlegelmilch and then, and then the concern was acquired by Alfred Menz of August Menz. So the tubeset initials CS to CS to HS to AM all originated @ the same concern & there is much more research warranted here to determine the family relationship. I'd hazard a guess Menz married a daughter of Hermann Schlegelmilch or similar.
