I have done paint over Parkerized finishes, never ever on a decent sporting shotgun, AKs & FALs only. I have a beat old High Standard pump I plan to finish in such a manner. The finishes hold up OK.

But strongly reconsider FUBARing a Model 23, how about just giving it a good coat of paste wax, don't buff, just let it sort of dry on the gun. That will give pretty good protection during a hunting trip and you can always clean it off with Alcohol or similar solvent.
