I did not expect such a quick reply from my post but I am extremely grateful to you guys.

Looks to be a blitz or trigger-plate action or one of those odd round action variants and I wonder if the 1908 refers to the number made on that action rather than the date. With the Nitro stamp it would date to post 1912.

I appreciate all the help you guys gave me but I am more confused now after you decided it is a sauer deviation.
Are these guns like Sears Appliances? They use Sears or Kenmores name but it could be a Whirlpool, Maytag, Roper or whatever.
I looked at Sauer listings on a couple of sights and I don't think the quality of the Sauer is as good as the gun I have, that is just my opinion.
I will keep working on finding the value of this gun but I never dreamed it would be this much of a challenge.

M-4 & I have brainstormed and it is similar to the Sauer variant but not exactly the same. We surmise that a parts kit was sourced from Liege and completed. It should realize a value similar to boxlocks of the same grade.

It is possible that the Nitro stamps were used as early as 1910 and it would be a stretch but I suppose a sporting weapon began in 1908 and completed close to 1910 may have experienced the new to be proof under the 1912 Suhl rules and 1911 Zella-Mehlis rules. It is not a Sauer production model nor does it wear any of the typical inhouse Sauer stamps but during this period Sauer sourced a handful of gesteck/parts kits and the mechanics that completed the blitz action variants for them could have easily been sourced by the Boys Eckebrecht(Heinrich & Johann Eckebrecht) at H. Scherping. I have serious reservations that either Heinrich or Johann Eckebrecht applied much effort to the sporting weapon and that it was a talented mechanic, pool of mechanics, in Suhl that was sourced by the Boys Eckebrecht. From his examples after the demise of the mechanics in & around Herzberg, it is evident that H. Scherping & Sauer had a close relationship as was there a similar one between H. Scherping & the Boys Merkel. From time to time the H. Scherping concern did source the craftsmen in & around Zella-Mehlis but the proof marks worn by this example do not bear out an effort from Z-M. More than likely H. Scherping had retired and the Boys Eckebrecht were exploring new ideas on how to increase their profit margins. Since others were toying with the idea of these Blitz actions, why not peddle one themselves. And it is possible that a client ordered one from H. Scherping.

Could you measure the length of the frame, the distance from the standing breech along the water table/barrel flat interface to the knuckle?

Anyone recognize the signature of the artisan M. Gounard(?) on this O/U Scherping that experienced proof in 1938 & is currently offered by Barnett's?

I do not know this engraver, but he is certainly good in depicting elk and white tail deer!

Edit: Nevertheless, I regard his work as some sort of vandalism...
