A buddy has a nifty 20 ga. W. Richards sxs. The chambers were opened up to 70mm and reproofed in 2009 to 3 tons. He'd been shooting Federal Top Gun loads and I've dissuaded him from that idea. He next tried RST's and was dissatisfied with performance. I'm an avid handloader, set up for 20 ga., and would like to help him out. Low pressure 20's are hard to find in the loading manuals I have. Anyone have 7/8 oz. load(s) they'd care to share?

Steve, There is a load on the IMR site using AA hulls, 800x, 7/8oz, rxp wads,7500psi @ 1200fps. Check it out. I have been using it for years. http://www.hodgdonreloading.com/data/shotgunHope this helps.

Try 800x 7/8 aa hull rem 209. Look the load up on Hodgdon site. Also several good Unique loads. There are even Longshot loads with decent pressures. Go to Alliant Powder and Hdgdon Powder sites. No reason not to load safe low pressure loads when you can get just about anything needed sent right to your door.

Wonder what he did not like about RST's ?
My 20 G handloads duplicate RST's in velocity and shot weight. To get low pressure with a 20 G 3/4 oz is a good choice. Alliant's 20/28 3/4 oz 14.5 @ 1200 fps 7200 # Extra 1/8 oz adds about 1000 # more or less. Difference in recoil is noticeable.

What's he looking for? Target loads? Game loads? If the latter, what birds will he be shooting?
For target loads, like skeet, light 3/4 oz is the way to go. 7/8, I've had good luck with the RST's on birds up to prairie grouse (sharptails and chickens) in size, early season. But I usually pack along a box of Kent Gamebore Traditional Game loads in case the shots are longer. Those are 2 1/2" shells rated for 3 ton/1 oz proof guns. With British 6's (slightly larger than US 7's), they'll handle pheasants out to the 30-35 yard range.

Re those low recoil/low noise AA's: I've shot with guys who've used them when it's around or below freezing on the skeet range. They sound pretty weak. I don't think they're a good choice for shooting in cold weather.

Not sure if Fiocchi still loads them, but years ago I used to shoot 3/4oz lower velocity (around 1000-1100fps) loads in my ca. 1916 20 ga 25" Model 12. The wonderful thing was pellets were of small but varying sizes which made it very appropriate to tight choke of the gun.

For 3/4oz loads I also use the 20/28 load that Boats references above. Great load.
