George, it is not legal, except in extraordinarily few circumstances, to buy or have a firearm for the purpose of self defense.

By that I mean defense from another human.

That's not to say some don't have guns for those purposes but it is not a legitimate reason for owning a firearm and our laws make the reason to own a restricted weapon germane in assessing whether you should be allowed to have one.
