What are you all using to black metal for inletting? I've been using the paste variety but would like to find an alternative. Does anyone use smoke lamps? If so, where can they be found?

I'm using the paste type also. Works for me. But then, I'm pretty much a novice at this. I think the lamp would work as well without the greasyness.

Covergirl Laser Red.
Take a small stiff bristle artists brush and poke it into the lipstick - dab the marking on the metal where you want it, reload the brush as needed.

brite red lipstick... applied with a tiny paint brush...and...I get for free...from the downstairs bathroom...it takes a little technique to paint it on uniformly, but it's like inletteing disclosure for the visually impaired (me)...wipes clean from the wood...it doesn't cost anything to try it once...

I use Prussian Blue for fitting wood to metal. I use a kerosene lamp for fitting metal to metal. I can get a better fit when smoking parts together.

I bought a little "alcohol lamp" on ebay for like $4.95. CHeck it out and you will fins a lot of them. I guess theuy were for folks who use hot knives to work wax or something. My dentist has one for heating gutta percha fillings. I use kerosene, not alcohol, in mine.

I use Jerrow's inletting black from Brownells. It washes off with soap.

You might like felt tip markers too.

Another lipstick guy here. I use a bright pink. Shows up very well. Reds are good too, although sometimes it really depends on what shoes you're wearing.

I use only a candle to blacken parts to be inletted. Works just fine without a lot of mess. Same way as Purdey, H&H and American gun makers stocked their guns. Why fool with perfection ? Ken

Dry erase (white board) markers are especially useful. I use nothing else. Blue seems to work better for some reason.
