For 12s and 16s, choke doesn't seem to be such a big deal. Open cylinder works about as well as IC. In true subgauges, however, I've come to the conclusion that a bit of choke really seems to improve lethality. Where does the 28 fall for most of you folks? Since this Dickinson is my first venture into choke tubes for side by sides, I'm a bit perplexed. I will try to pattern it first, but if that doesn't happen in time, what's a good mix for ruffed grouse, IC and IM?

My Parker Repro 28ga is factory Quail 1 & 2. Measures .003/.008, which is about skeet 1 & 2. Shot a bunch of quail with it last year. I shoot more woodcock than ruffs, so those are good chokes for me. But I don't know whether I'd opt for more open chokes for ruffs or just do something like shoot Fiocchi Golden Pheasant 7 1/2's (7/8 oz).

Hi, I just used my Dickinson 28 this last weekend on our Sharptail opener. The chokes I used were Lt Mod/IM, but, and here's the rub. The tubes as they are marked are looser than what they state.
My Dickinson's bore's measure out at .546 (L) and .545 (R), On measuring the tubes with those bore diameters the chokes are:
Cyl Tube is Cyl
IC Tube is Skeet
Mod Tube is Lt Mod or very tight IC
IM Tube is Mod
Full Tube is IM
So, without measuring you guns bores/tubes it's hard to say what choke your really shooting out of that tube. Of course patterning is the only way to learn what your tubes are throwing.
As I said, I used my Mod/Full tubes and the gun did the trick, was able to shoot a limit with all the birds stone dead when they hit the ground. The average distance on these birds was about 30yds (they were spooky for some reason).

28 does not put out enough shot to make clean kills...cept for little dove like song birds...so full and full is probably best for ethical song bird killers...
or if you are an expert skeet shooter who has mastered the 20 but is not ready to go to the 410, then skeet and skeet might be the right choice...

If you were shooting 3/4 oz shot in a 12 bore, what chokes would you choose? Choose by name (full, IM, mod, IC, etc.), not numerical constriction. It takes differing numerical constriction in differing bores sizes for equal choke effect. For practical purposes, a 3/4 oz 12 bore full equals a 3/4 oz 28 bore full.

My father killed a bunch of pheasants with his 28ga. Parker Repro choked IC and MOD. and standard 3/4 oz. loads. Those birds didn't seem to know if they were shot with dad's 28 or my 16.

I once went 27 straight on preserve roosters (good-flying ones) with a Repro 28ga choked .005/.010, which should be IC/M in a 28ga. Included 2 true doubles. Needed help from the dog on a couple, and a couple did require a 2nd shot. But most came down dead. I'd loaded up a bunch of 3/4 oz 7's. Worked very well.

If birds are going to be near IC and MOD work well, if mostly longer range 25-35 yards then MOD and FULL. And yes a 28 will kill a dove at 35 yards, neither the shot nor the bird knows or cares what it came out of gauge wise. It's about being able to put shot on target to kill the target. People who think one gauge is good or bad for a task miss the entire point. A gun is a gun it is what you do with it that matters not the guns fault or the bullets fault.
