BrentD, I'm going to give the dry-erase marker a try.

I've tried all the above and others and ended up using Jerrow's inletting black from Brownell's as suggested by dogdigger. Well, not all the above; I've stayed away from Prussian Blue. Used it once in working on an engine. As I remember, the stuff got on everything in spite of my efforts to contain it.

I prefer blue marker for metal/metal. When I can't access a spot with a marker pen, I use a Bic lighter or one of those butane charcoal lighters; they work as well as a candle but I don't have to keep them lit.
For wood I use both Jerrow's black and pink lipstick.... when the black is gone I won't buy anymore. To me, more important than the medium is the applicator. I use a cheap artist's brush but I shorten the bristles by about half and use a pointillist technique....dabbing with the end of the bristles rather than brush strokes. Sort of like touching up a textured ceiling. It helps me get a nearly "dimensionless" layer of color.

I just watched the H&H dvd and they all had some kind of lighter, probably filled with kerosene or mineral spirits instead of lighter fluid. They flicked the lighter out and two or three quick passes was all it took.

Just due to the temps, I'd say only for metal. Did you buy the H&H dvd? Nice overview, although I wish it had another 2 hrs of details.
