St. Ledger had the reputation for best work. Typical bone charcoal pack, with a lot of years of experience. The colors are subdued, and look best on English guns.
There was an article in Shooting Sportsman about St. Ledger a few years back.

Diggory once told me that St. Ledger was the only one who could get the colors right, for English guns.

There's also some commentary about in house case coloring in the McKay Brown book by Dallas. If I'm not mistaken, that maker wanted more control over process for their preference than they were able to get by sending it out.

I read that section of the Dallas book last night, by chance, and DMB essentially rejected St. Ledger's process as having too many distortions and he devised a coloring/quenching process that resulted in fewer distortions which he performed in house after taking back the case coloring work from St. Ledger.

Like many things in the Guntrade it is surrounded in mumbo jumbo to frighten people off .
Apply yourself and anything can be done , the late Tony Treadwell , a so called amateur sorted it all out and did good work all documented in his book.
Tony White (T R White Gunmakers ) does fine work.
He learned his process off Billy Lane of West Bromwich , who taught Ray St.Ledger. Billy got so well paid (NOT) that he packed it all in and went off to drive a Fork truck in warehouse.Easy to colour case harden using charcoal and leather /bone mixtures and lots of experimenting.
