$350. The etched engraving pattern is early, but it is still a Savage. The model 220 single shots that early had the same decoration...Geo

In the pawn shops around here it would likely be $350 and they'd take $300. At Cabelas it would be $500.

Savage Arms Corp. expanded their shotgun offerings for 1937, by adding three break-action Models to their Model 720 "Browning" autoloader. The Model 220 hammerless single barrel --

The Model 320 hammerless double --

And, the Model 420 over/under --

Savage Arms Corp. apparently thought better of the Model 320 and it never appears again. Guess they decided to do the Fox Model B using parts from their J. Stevens No. 530 double in a slightly nicer profiled and decorated frame. The over/unders lasted to the 1941 catalogues but are gone from the 1942 catalogues. The Model 220 last appears in the 1948 catalogues. Pre-WW-II the catalogues state the frame was polished and blued, and after the war case hardened. The Model 220 reappears in 1953, again with a polished and case hardened frame. Nowhere do I see any mention of it being decorated.

Years ago a local shop had a 20ga and a .410 thusly engraved (etched), so they definitely do exist. I actually wanted them but I was even more broke than I usually am at the time.

Regarding the 12ga, older is better with the B's, but Geo's $350 price is spot on. I recently sold a near-mint one that dated from 1961 at exactly that. Tried my darndest to get $400 but couldn't do it.

Agree that older is better with B's. And that one's older. If it were a 20 or a 16, it'd be worth maybe another $100 or so.

A 420 in 20ga was my first double. I was an OU guy before I ever owned a sxs. I was thinking about a brand new 311 (we're talking early 60's, not a lot of choices), but my dad found that 420 for me. $65, including a decent soft case. Recently bought one in 16ga. Nostalgia got the best of me, and it was in unusually good shape. Turns out I shoot it pretty well too! But a Marlin 90 feels svelte and sleek compared to a 420 or 430.

What vintage are these Model 220s with decorated frames? Utica? Chicopee Falls? Westfield? Were they "trade branded" guns made for Sears, Wards or some such? I looked at all the Savage and Savage/Stevens/Fox catalogues from 1937 to 1958 except 1946 and 1950 which I don't have, and no mention of decoration on the frame?!? I'm not doubting you guys, just curious.

I'd like to see some pictures.
