Cars, yup for a while, as well as machine tools (churchill) earthmoving equipment (birtley), they also owned ariel motorcycles and triumph motorcycles. Basically if it was made of metal, chances are bsa made it. Of course they employed thousands of skilled people, a very old fashioned notion, companies only employ robots and computers now.

I had a plain bsa side by side years ago, it was a good quality and good handling gun. The only fly in the ointment was the barrels were pitted. It had no engraving apart from BSA stamped on the sides of the action. I would like to know what haddoke held against them ? They weren't purdeys or H&H, but they probably allowed the ordinary working man a decent gun at a price he could afford.

When I posted that both Mr. Haddoke and Mr. Weiland gave BSA short shrift in their books I did not mean to imply either criticized them. They just had little to say.

There has been an article in "Shooting Sportsman" fairly recently regarding BSA guns. I haven't found it yet in my stack but I know I remember it. That article was where I first saw a BSA that looked just like the one I posted here in my original post.

I said to myself then that if I ever saw one like that for sale, I'd try to buy it. When this one came up I jumped on it...Geo

Geo

They don't sell for big money over here, but are a nice gun. What i have found with cheaper doubles is they are usually cumbersome and heavy, especially in the barrels. The bsa that i had certainly wasn't like that. The stock wood was plain, but strong and straight, there was no engraving as i said previously, but it handled like a much more expensive gun.

While home for lunch I managed to find the "Shooting Sportsman" article I mentioned above. It's in the Nov/Dec 2013 issue and is titled "The BSA Shotgun; An English Classic Without the 'Name' " and is written by David Baker.

It is quite informative for any interested in an off brand gun. The picture of the high grade BSA in the article is not exactly like the one I've bought, but clearly is the same grade...Geo

Nice gun. I have two BSA Martini-Henry's from Afghanistan. Sorry but can't resist this... Brother's 1965 BSA Hornet flat-tracker at Fort Bragg: BSA was affectionally known back then as "Bastard Stopped Again." I actually hitch-hiked up to Birmingham in May 1971 to see the factory - was thinking of taking a franchise - but it was something out of the 19th century. I expected to see Oliver Twist working there. I did have a BSA Gold Star DBD-34 from 1954 which was a flat tracker - will post a photo. And I saw Dick Mann win the Daytona 200 in 1970 on a BSA-3.

Dangit George, now I'm going to have to hunt for a BSA SXS to go with my '66 BSA 650cc motorcycle and my BSA action rifle.

Plenty were made and not hard to find. The plain actioned non-ejector models don't go for all that much. Lagopus.....

Here you are; various ones for sale in the U.K. Note some doubles are under 100. There is also one of the refurbished R.A.F. guns that I mentioned there too. http://www.gunstar.co.uk/Shotguns-for-sale?sstr=bsa Lagopus.....
