Hi all, just curious. When you lube/grease your hinge pin/bearing surfaces do you apply it just prior to using your double or do you apply it after your done cleaning and prior to storage?
Thanks!

I always apply after cleaning. So whenever you open the gun all hinge and rub points are protected.

Same here. Otherwise I'd forget it. However, I'm pretty sure when it's put into a takedown case the grease picks up dirt particles. Oh well, nothing's perfect.

When I place my guns in a case, they are clean and the barrels are dry. No mess in the case. I do have a small tin of grease in the case to lube the hinge pin prior to assembly. Works well and keeps the case clean. A set of accessories in the case are really nifty and fun to use...also they really do serve a purpose.

The KEY thing here is that you should clean off the old grease taking with it the dirt, grit etc - and apply fresh clean grease. How often - well - if you work on the basis it should never get dry and should be changed when dirty ...... then the answer will depend on your usage and you should be able to judge. I do mine about every 4 or 5 uses - clean off with a tissue and a tiny smear of fresh - and at the end of the cleaning operation before storage.

As far as casing a gun, I never use a hard case if I am just going to the gun club for a days shooting but use a soft case. I suppose if I was going out of town and carrying agun I would use a hard case and thus apply the grease when putting the gun together and sleaning any excess grease off when putting back in tha case.

I keep my guns assembled and transport locally in soft cases. If I shoot a shotgun for even 25 targets I clean off the old grease and apply new before it goes back in the safe. Dirty grease, and it gets dirty quickly, will cause unnecessary wear. Keeping clean grease on my guns is cheap and easy. Jeff

I always use a hard case for my most used guns. They get cleaned after use. They go into the hard case ungreased. It is a simple thing to apply a tiny bit of grease to the trunnions or hinge pin and hook, the knuckle, etc. when I assemble it just prior to shooting. I cannot understand how it could be forgotten. You create a routine, just like brushing my teeth before my morning coffee.
When I take a hunting gun to the field it goes in a soft case. It is assembled, so it is already greased. I can't see what's hard about remembering to grease a doublegun before you assemble it.
If you will use a little syringe filled with the grease you can do it in a few seconds. All this preoccupation with tins and bottles, in order to be "traditional" is beyond me.

Molykote or graphite, prefer graphite as it does not attract dirt and doesn't wear off easily.
