Hmmm. While home for lunch I thought I'd take a picture of my combination gun barrels to show the steel shot and damascus rifle. The patterned rifle barrel wasn't showing up much in either the inside light or mid-day direct sun. Maybe I've been wrong for years and both barrels are steel. I'll look again this evening...Geo

In good light and with magnification, what I had always thought to be some sort of damascus pattern appears to be a liberal application of cold blue to cover old barrel blemishes. Both barrels seem to be steel.

I need to be more careful about things I think I already know. Sometimes what I already know is wrong.

I apologize for misleading the posters here. Oh well, at least I can quit flinching now when I light up one of those big .43 Mauser cartridges...Geo

George,

I believe I misspoke in an earlier post and called my .43 Mauser capegun a .41 Mauser. Had to check back in the thread to figure out what you meant. Sorry for the confusion.

The .43 Mauser is an obsolete black powder German military round very similar to our 45/70 Government trapdoor. Popular in Africa around the 1890s era. Approximately 11 mm.

Last smokeless for black commercial production I am aware of was Canadian Dominion brand. I found a cache of old CIL/Dominion ammo and use it most of the time. I know, I probably ought to sell the ammo on the collector market instead of shooting it.

I also use a custom reloader, <http://gadcustomcartridges.com/>. This gentleman reloads a number of obsolete or out of production cartridges at a reasonable price...Geo

George,
Phenix City Al. shouldn't be too far from you; you can get it handloaded from LEEs Gunshop on 14th street. He also has some CIL. I don't have any connection to him.

Thanks Mike. I'm saving all my once fired brass and if I ever run low I will certainly check out the man in Phoenix City...Geo
