I recommend Prof. Wood's dissertation on the Birmingham Proof Trial regarding Laminated tubes. His analysis was that the results were skewed towards Laminated being stronger because one of the three sets lasted an inordinate time before deformation (the other Laminated tubes were comparable to other types of tubes).

I prefer wood to plastic, leather to nylon, waxed cotton to Gore-Tex, and split bamboo to graphite.
