Just acquired this "ole darlin" to add to my vintage/antique front stuffers. She's made by William Landell of Glasgow. From information I was able to find, he was an ironmouger, cutler, instrument maker and tool and gun maker.Originally he was in partnership with a William Neilson who died in 1858 at which time Landell became sole proprietor. He died in 1891. This gun is of fair quality and appears to have seen little use over the years. Barrels are 31" and both are stamped 13. No dents in either barrel and they ring very clear. There isn't even any pitting on the action face. Checkering is very nice. I'm guessing it has the original ramrod. I don't know if I've ever felt smoother operating hammers and triggers on another muzzleloader thus far, either antique or modern. This gun appears to be ready for the field as it is.

That's a dandy. Scarce as hens teeth in that condition. Bet you can't wait till fall and smelling the smoke drifting through the hardwoods and grouse feathers floating in the gentle breeze. Post pictures!

Nice gun! I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one drawn to those old muzzle loaders.

This is all IGC has on Landell:

Name William Landell
Address1 32 Gallowgate
Address2 106 Trongate
Address3 106 Trongate & Silvan Works, Broad Street, Mile End
Address4 108 Trongate
City/Town Glasgow
State/Region/Province Scotland
Country United Kingdom
Trade Cutler, Gun, Tool and Saw Maker, Ironmonger
Other Address
Dates 1846-1901
Notes
William Landell was recorded in 1846 at 32 Gallowgate, Glasgow.
In 1848 he was recorded at 106 Trongate, and from the mid 1870s until about 1900 he was also recorded at the Silvan Works, Broad Street, Mile End, Glasgow.

In 1901 he appears to have occupied 108 Trongate, but he seems to have closed soon after.

Yes, most of that info matches what I have found except that I came across an obituary that shows he died in 1891. Apparently his sons ran the business for awhile afterwards which might explain it being closed down sometime shortly after 1901.

Yes Steve, there is something that "draws me" to these old front stuffers. I just like to sit back and imagine back to the time while the gun was actually being made and then wonder about how and where these guns were used and still managed to survive through the years.

Who ever owned it before certainly took care of it. Shear speculation on my part but possibly a settler that had this one gun and used it for everything and knew its value.
