Per the 1954 Rules of Proof, here are the equivalent service pressure values:
RevDocDrew,
Is this still applicable?

3 tons--8,938 psi
3 1/4 tons--9,682 psi
3 1/2 tons--10,427 psi
4 tons--11,917 psi
These numbers SHOULD apply to guns proved under the 1925 rules, which were stamped only with chamber length and shot charge. Thus, a 2 1/2" chambered gun, 1925 rules of proof, would be equivalent to 3 tons; a 2 3/4" chambered gun to 3 1/4 tons.

A service pressure of 3 tons per sq. in. = 8,938 psi service pressure (SAAMI)

Gentlemen:

Glad to see this thread has continued. I no-longer have a HRF barreled gun, but my curiosity about the subject remains. I understand Dr. Drew's reticence about absolute declarations, but there should a reasoned approach to safely using an older gun. You folks seem to be on that path.

I finally acquired the appropriate photography gear.

Here's a "before" pic shot outside of the 16ga Meridan with HRF 2-iron tubes that will be included in my next run.

Photography tips would be welcome.

Regards
Ken

I prefer wood to plastic, leather to nylon, waxed cotton to Gore-Tex, and split bamboo to graphite.

Some pic tips are about 1/2 way down here Ken, and I think the best is to "float" what you wish to capture 9-10" above a SOLID grey background

Anxious to see the 'after'! Will you be bringing some show-off pieces to the 2017 Vegas show?

Hopefully.

I'm right in the midst of my case coloring tests. I happen to have a copy of a letter written by Oscar Gaddy to Frank Brownell regarding case coloring temperatures. Have you see it? If not, I can take a pic and post it on a thread. It goes into a fair bit of detail regarding the pitfalls of Martinistic Hardening, with Oscar advocating quenches below critical temp, relying on the formation of Cementite and Pearlite rather than Martinsite as the composition of the skin. Oscar asserts that it essentially eliminates the possibility of deformation.

Regards
Ken

Martinistic Hardening is WAY past me brother, but please do scan and post; in as large a format as possible for readability

Here's a Baker 1897 10ga with HRF hybrid twist/damascus tubes that cla0927 has for sale on Gunbroker. I did the tubes and a little other work, the action was slightly loose so MarkII tightened it up. The gun is a Shooter and ready to go. The tube pics are washed out due to lighting, and are blacker than they appear in some of the pics. Anyone interested can feel free to PM me with questions. Three day no shoot inspection if sold. $10 to Dave if anyone buys it.

This picture of the tubes is really washed out as far as contrast as well, but you can see the pattern detail. It was taken before I upgraded my photo gear and lighting.
