IMP-MOD hit the nail on the head Mr. Glenn. I guess I should have approached the question that way --- I have in the past. Steve Meyers, a friend of eightbore and I had the very same conversation and Steve wound up sending me numerous pages of pictures of dogs, pheasants & etc. showing me what really tripped his trigger. After hashing it over, we came to a conclusion about how the gun should come out. The sooner you can get a handle on what YOU consider the ideal looking gun should look like (in your minds eye) , the better. As I told you, once you have this step figgured out, let it cool for a few weeks without looking at what you have put together. Then, go back and review same to insure it IS what you really want. If all is still good, we're off to the races. ken

Glenn. It's a good idea to see what engraving works on other A.H. Fox guns. With that boxlock you don't have a huge amount of room on the sides of the receiver.Prabably the best area for a game scene,if you so desire is on the bottom of the receiver. Also if it is an AE grade, I wonder if it is possible to fill in the current engraving, or to incorporate it into another design.

IMP-MOD It is customery to draw file the action free of any previous gun scratching. This not only frees the action up for new work but also allows the engraver to sharpen up rounded edges & insure the total surface has a decent hand polish before starting cutting.

Gentlemens:
Mr. Mann has the action right now, but he was promising to send me pitchers of it. I will see him this weekend and look into that. The action has worked on and all previous engraving removed. Mr. Hurst will have a blank canvas.
There are some nicks and dings on the corners of the top rib that I wish to remove. This will be a noble experiment with laser welding. I will take some pictures of this when it happens and post them here.

Question for A.H. Fox Owners. I was thinking of doing a project with a Sterlingworth, but I was wondering if it is the same quality as the higher grades of Fox, or is it a cheaper gun. For example I have a L.C. Smith 2E and I know that it has Crown steel barrels. Higher grades had Nitro, and Whitworth steel. In the L.C. lineup a more expensive gun got you better barrels, workmanship, etc. Is it the same with A.H. Fox?

The Sterly is the same gun as the higher grades with less finish. I believe the same is true of the L.C. Smith guns and all the rest of the classic American makers as well. I don't know that there was really any difference in the quality of the barrel steels other than what the company stamped on them either...Geo
