My first Fox was an 85%, 30", 12 ga. Philly Sterlingworth. It became mine for $850. That was the market at that time, not cheap, not badly overpriced, either. At that time 16s and 20s had not yet begun to demand the prices they do now. I still have it. Shot doves with it one whole season. That was when I learned I did not want another serious dove gun that did not have ejectors.
I would gladly pay over $1000 for a nice 32" 12 ga. Sterly.

A $1200 non ejector 12 gauge 30" Sterlingworth is not out of line. They are wonderful guns, and very attractive in high condition. I sold a near mint example to a friend for a bit over $800 because it had a nicely installed Silver pad and 3 1/4" chambers. I wish I could have it back.

Based on the posts I called and asked the manager of the store to hold it so I could check again how it fits and feels.
And he will give it to me for $895 cash.
Thanks for all the comments

I was just paging through Sterlingworths on Gunbroker and there are plenty of them with opening bids asking well north of $1k and some north of $10k. Of course, there seems to be a shortage of bidders.
I'm not sure what the varieties of Sterlingworths are. There seem to be Fox Sterlings., AH Fox Sterlings, Philly Sterlings, and Savage Sterlings so apparently the brand was bought and moved about a bit. Are any more or less desirable than others? As a general rule the earlier the gun the better the quality was in the build. Early Fox Sterlingworth Pin Gun's were really well put together. Most Foxes made in Philly before the sale to Savage were of higher build quality then the later guns IMO.

Base your decision on the gun, not on the origin. I have a Utica Fox 20ga Sterlingworth that I'd put up against any Philly Fox for fit, finish, or what have you. I paid nearly the price you mentioned for my Utica Fox 12ga Sterlingworth with some condition because it was what I wanted, and I was glad to get it. What other good double gun can you buy for under a thousand dollars?

"Baker Batavia Leader...Lefever G's and H's...BUNIDS (I don't know what that is)..." and NID's; OK, y'all win.
My point was that when you find a good double under a thousand I wouldn't complain too much about the price.
