Twenties seem to still have a premium associated with them, and that's probably because of the perceived (& for the most part, real) availability and cost of the shells. Sixteens can be as practical in almost every respect (weight & handling) as a 20 and still cost much less (again, likely because of the ammo issue). I have a boxlock 16 that is usually much lighter than most of the 20s I run across, and it kills better for me than some 12s. Yet, even I found myself looking for a nice, light 20 to take advantage of the cheaper and more commonly available ammo. I finally, sort-of gave up. In the FWIW column, while I started out looking for a good utility twenty, I actually ended-up with a fairly practical 28-gauge.

Lloyd, I think you have the best plan. Look for a nice American 20 and settle for an ideal French, British or American 16.

A shooting buddy has a 20 bore Darne for sale, reasonably priced too.

Can't hurt to look. Send him my email brentd@iastate.edu. I'm thinking I need to save some more money, before I'm a serious contender for whatever it is that I am looking for, but let's take a peek.

A decent Darne in 16 will be much less expensive than one in 20.
Most older Darnes are stocked for a runty 11 year old boy. This one isn't. Not a 20, but, it definitely has the right stuff: http://www.gunsinternational.com/guns-fo...un_id=100684603Some older Darnes are indeed stocked too short, and with too much drop. I would wager that the percentage of Darne guns that fall into that catagory is no more or less than early Fox guns with too much drop and too short. That said, a Darne is an acquired taste. I love mine, but, not to the exclusion of anything else. If you encounter a Darne that does not fit, or, is a project, I highly suggest you DON'T buy it. They are perhaps the worst project guns to be had. I don't have a Darne 16 at the moment. But, I do have two 12s, a 20, and a 28 that would do most of what a 16 would. If the right 16 came along, I would happily pursue it. Best, Ted

That would definitely get my attention (except for gauge), but I need more money!

Wow...a 6lb3 12! Lighter than most American 20s. Cool gun Ted, good find.

Patrick, the seller is a solid guy.
He told me a few years ago how he hates Darnes. ☺
I sold my 16 Darne a few years ago and replaced it with a Charlin 12.
Some day I hope to find a 20 Manufrance Ideal, at a price I can afford.

I sold my Charlin 16 and replaced it with a Darne 12. Charlins are good guns, but, they are just another gun with a hinge pin. The brilliance of the Regis Darne R model will always be the absence of a hinge pin. Best, Ted

Exactly where is the hinge pin on a Charlin ?
