Get a few chercking tools and flat pieces of hard wood. Apply a tru-oil finish. Start out with 16 lines per inch. This is course large diamonds and takes many passes to sharpen up the diamond but easier to follow the lines. Try different angles on master lines to get a nice diamond shape that appeals to you. Get good on flat surface before you try a curved surface, Get a checkering vise. Get magnifying glasses.. Get excellent no shadow lighting. Get riffers to shape up diamonds. This can all be bought from Brownells. Go slow. Start simple. Do not try to checker a soft wood as the diamonds tear out. Chercking is alway done on a finished stock.
