Good evening Forum members. I finally took the plunge and I just acquired the following combination gun at an auction. I do not have the gun in my hands yet, however, I was hopping if you can help me identify it and the caliber in question. Based on a reading I did in other threads here, it appears the caliber is 8x57JR. I presume the 16 gauge has 65mm chambers due to its age. Am I correct in my assumptions? This is the first gun of such type that I have purchased and I have zero experience in such matter. However, the gun style and its quality appealed to me and I would like to learn to shoot it. The pics below are from the auction website. What can you tell me about its maker and its origins, based on the style and proof marks? If it in fact turns out to be 8x57JR, is that a good hunting caliber for North American game? What kind of modern caliber does it compare to? What should be my first steps once I have it in my possession, other than have a well qualified gunsmith evaluate it?
Thank you in advance for all your help. BillK

A nice o/u combination gun, congratulations on its acquisition. Proofed in Suhl. Unless the shotgun chamber has been lengthened to 2 3/4 it is 2 1/2, you will have to check. The shotgun barrel is choked but you will have to check the degree.

Properly loaded the 8 X 57 is as good as the 30-06 for any North American game except probably the big bears. When you receive it you should cast the chamber and slug the bore to confirm what it is.

I would urge caution. Fine German firearms are as addictive as heroin. I have no experience with heroin but way too much with German firearms.

Lovely Witten steel tubes top & bottom on a post 1912 Suhl example. 7,7mm plug gauge stamp & a load of 1,7 grammes GBP w/ a steel jacketed bullet. Can you post an image of the marks around the forend lug?

Note my comments in the Double rifle, Paradox....thread above, concerning this gun. sharps4590 is absolutely correct in saying German Firearms are addictive. It would be to your benefit to join the German Gun Collectors Assn., check out the website.

Yes I agree that it is absolutely correct in saying German Firearms are addictive. My current count is only 6 (4 drillings, 1 rifle & 1 shotgun).
Very nice over/under. Enjoy it!!

Thank you all for your replies. I sure need all the help and advise you gentlemen can provide, since this is unchartered teritorry for me. I will report back once I have the gun in my hands and I will post more detailed pics. In the mean time, feel free with offering additional guidance and expertise in ballistics, loads, gun quality, etc.
Thank you in advance. BillK

Good afternoon gentlemen. I just took possession of the gun. The rib is scribed with the following: "MILLER & GREISS, MUNCHEN". Do you know anything about those names?
I need to slug the barrel and cast the chamber once i receive the cerosafe I ordered. BillK
