Springfield Arsenal made one out of cast steel for Trapdoor rifles. I have owned and used several. Replaced the bottom guard screw with a longer one fixing it in place. They also fitted Trapdoor Officers Models with wood add on pistol grips, same design.

Never saw one on a shotgun but the principal ought to work fine . Try google images have a look at officers models. Wood ones lot of variation. Under Trapdoor cast pistol grip photos of the ones I used. Used to be fairly common gun show items.
