What might be causing "brown spots" on silver nitride finished Merkel.....oxidation of some sort??
How might I prevent from ocurring?

I have asked the same type of question around the internet for over 5 years because of similar issues (greying/discoloration on a Citori) without getting a satisfactory answer. The discoloration seems to come from acidic hand sweat. I use Flitz to polish it up and it works well.
It seems that the lack of good info stems from "Silver Nitride" being a marketing name of a hardening/coloring process that most probably does include any Silver Nitride (highly reactive and unstable).
I've heard that Silver Nitriding is:
*Plasma nitriding
*Plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition
*Electoless nickel
The plasma coatings are PFM to me, so I quit looking around.

I've noted the same thing. Mfrs say "silver nitride" for anything that looks silver it seems. IMO, the Citori graying that I've seen on the bottom edges of the frame are where the clearcoat and/or silver metal (whatever it is) has worn thru at various levels and usually you're seeing bare steel in the worst spots with some graying from corrosion. Machinery's Handbook has a description of "silver nitride" and one method on how it's done.

Thanks Chuck. I just found the 27th Ed for 14.50...I've seen that you and some of the other metal guys use it as a reference. One of these days/weeks/years I'll get to my experimental stripping of the Citori triggerguard. One of the internet guys said he stripped it with 30% hydrogen peroxide. I've got the electoless nickel stripper and that was plan A, but that was 14 months ago.

Don't rush into anything. I try not to. 14 mos seems like a reasonable time to plan a project.
