I would definitely agree the overall quality of the NID is higher than the NS. "IF" properly fitted the rotary bolt is a superior lock-up as it gives two-way bolting. In a discussion on this several years back a number of members smoked their bolts & checked for fit & as I recall nobody found one fitted to give bearing to the rear of the hole in the rib. Again "IF" all it does is keep the barres closed then I do not truly see it as a superior bolt to the simple wedge of the NS. I will say the only guns I can recall hearing of "Blowing Open" on firing were those fitted with rotaru bolts. It seems as if that rotary bolt is not very precisely fitted it will with just a bit of thrust cam itself open.

Miller, that's interesting. Did people smoke all rotary top bolt shotguns or just the NIDs?

Not exactly sure, but I think you meant that to be within the context of S x S guns, maybe even Ithacas only? Anyway, I have seen other designs come unbolted at the firing of the first barrel, but they were all O/U guns. Perhaps the superposed design lends itself to that greater tendency, particularly if the top barrel is fired first. SRH

Stan; Yes I was only speaking of SxS guns. This is of course not to say that no other types of these have ever opened upon firing, the rotary bolted ones just seem to be the ones I have knowledge of.
Treblig; it has been several years this came up bu to the best of my recollection Smiths, Foxes & NIDs were all checked by various members & none reported a fit to the rear. To the best of my knowledge Alexander Brown developed the original rotary bolt & this was one of the features he touted highly that it served not only to bolt the barrels shut but also to help absorb the back thrust from firing by binding the standing breech to the barrels. This was also of course the claim of Greener's cross bolt but his was much easier to fit properly.

Although Nitros are decent guns, the Ithaca "economy" offering that was much closer in quality to the NID was the Lefever A Grade. Not many of them made, and the sale price often reflects that--especially if it's a 16 or a 20.

Yessiree- saw a nice A grade LeFever- ejectors, single ns trigger-90% shape- at a Cabela's gun library recently- $1650- sweetheart indeed- 28" choked 1 and 2- BUT- a 16 gauge, damnit. Puglisi has a nice A 12- $2500 I believe. A bit pricey. RWTF
