Last season in particular would have been the time to chase quail in TX. I got a brief taste in the OK Panhandle. Wow. Time for all TX quail hunters to cross their fingers. Good spring and summer weather with sufficient rain, the quail population might reach nuisance level this year.

Dale Rollins is not quite so optimistic for next year. Last season was the best quail hunting I've ever seen in my lifetime and I've done a lot of it. I had a few days last season where I found 30+ covey of quail/day, the average being 18-20 covey/day, and a bad day 12-14. It was unreal, for sure. And talk about making bird dogs.....there is no substitute for wild birds.

Fingers crossed. We are very dry in the Panhandle and much of the quality quail country. However, there is an abundance of bugs and weed seed from last year is abundant. Subsurface moisture is still very good. So there is definitely hope and the year is young. I'm just nervous about La Niņa forecast to begin this summer.

R.R., you are so right, and I am so embarrassed. I have shot doves here since 1959, and I never stopped to add up how many days our season was. I love it so much that I guess it just seems shorter than it really is. 'Course, the three way split season doesn't help me keep track any easier either.
Maybe I need to reword my title to " Welcome, Texas"! Man, I really made myself look stupid.

Stan, who is counting when you are having fun in a pursuit you enjoy so much ? I am just glad we finally caught up with you Georgia boys on our allotted days.....
Saw a reference to Rollins above, he was by last week and we discussed possibilities for next year. History has never rewarded us with two such seasons as last year back to back , and its only rival in my lifetime ,was the '87 season.
That said , a season with 60% of the birds found last year would exceed most any Bobwhite gunners dreams.
Light showers across this area this weekend are a start, Bobwhite calls are resounding across this country, and I opined to Rollins that if we just have modest to average rainfall in this nesting season (1.5"-2"/mo.) in April, May and June we will see a great chance for a better than average bird crop......and average on this ranch is pretty satisfying to me....

As a lifelong, dedicated pursuer of Zenaida macroura (along with whitewings and ringnecks), I read the Texas Parks & Wildlife's bulletin with great joy. More days to let those little gray demons make a fool of me, with just enough good days to keep me from swearing off forever. I'm so excited over this, I think I'll purchase a new(to me)shotgun in the never-ending pursuit of finding the perfect dove gun. Maybe I'll even invite Professor Wood along on a couple of hunts.
