mikek, if you have a boxed set of wire gauge drills, the box should have eaxh drill marked for gauge size (#1-#60 most common) and the decimal equivalent. If you don't have the decimal, but can determine the # of the drill, either google it or post back and I'll, or one of the other guys, will look it up for you. A small thread pitch gauge can be bought off the internet or at a tool store for a few bucks.

Years ago I had a British Manton ML SXS and it took .25-28 thread percussion nipples.

Very true. However, 1/4-28 is very common thread size for British nipples as well. First thing to do is determine what you have, you might get lucky and it will be a common thread size. [/quote]

does anyone know of a source to the 1/4-28 nipples? Peter Dyson had them listed and they responded to my questions until I ordered and paid for them- last July- since then - no product, no response to email or snail mail

1/4-28 is the most common thread size for nipples. Track of the Wolf lists many styles in that thread pitch, including the oversized nipples.

I very recently purchased .265-28 (oversized) percussion nipples from track of the Wolf. I paid $5.99 each for stainless steel nipples, but they also had regular steel nipples as well. Track of the Wolf has a selection of many different sizes and they're very responsive to questions. I ordered my parts on Thursday and had them on Monday.

i have built several flintlock and know TOW well

my confusion was on the BSF designation for the threads, Dyson specified BSF - TOW only does on the 9/32

I'll pull the originals on my percussion gun and double check them

1/4-28 is one of those overlapping threads. Really the only significant difference between a BSF 1/4-28 and a UNF 1/4-28 is a 55 degree vs. a 60 thread angle. At the pitch diameter that difference is less than .001, well within the tolerance zones of either thread.

If the UNF male thread was made to it's maximum tolerance diameters, it might be a bit firm going in. I have found however that they are usually made somewhere in the middle to lower end of the tolerance range, so it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

thanks- should have paid more attention to my Machinist Grandfather and Manufacturing Engineering father when I had the chance lol

I would just hand them whatever and they would just look at it and say oh that's an xx-YY and off I'd go to the parts shelf or the tap and die set
