So as not to mess up the Ithaca post and speaking of straight stocked trap guns, does anybody have a theory why so many early trap guns were straight gripped.

I have an early Remington 32 #838 that is straigh stocked, early Baker (octagon barrel) SBT, 1894 Remington CEO, 1894 Remington F, Francotte SBT and Remington 10 and 29 trap guns that are straight.

Also seems that most of the the Win Mod 1912 Tournament Grade and Black Diamond guns that I have seen also have straight grips. Maybe something to do with that elevated right elbow that you see in a lot of pictures of old trap shoots?

And they're still using that high elbow (sometimes with an abrupt double pump up and down right before they fixate on whatever trap shooters fixate on) with the tightest radius grip imaginable.

They were probably straight up to about the 60s then most went to a pistol grip. Especially on the Model 12s. Now, few use a straight grip and if they do, chances are they don't shoot very well.

The straight grips on early trap guns are likely a carryover from the Pigeon guns. My Fox single barrel trap gun of 1935 vintage has a straight grip with a Monte Carlo. Straight grips were pretty much the norm on Remington Model 1894 Trap and/or Pigeon Guns. Throughout the period of manufacture of the Models 10 and 29 (and Model 11s during that time) the trap guns are always shown in the catalogues with straight grips, but would be made to order with a half or full pistol grip at 6 to 8 weeks lead time. Trap guns with capped full pistol grips are first shown in the Remington catalogues when the Model 31 arrived.

Jack O'Connor wrote that a straight grip slightly cramped your wrist and had a tendancy to make you shoot high!?!
