Bob, if the old finish was shellac, then alcohol will remove it, or move it to the other areas to fill in. If the finish was varnish then varnish remover. Anything that thins a product will remove it, eventually.
I like shellac put on by French Polishing, almost instant gratification.



Also you don't have to take the stock off to do this, if you get any of the finish on the metal you can leave it or use a rag in alcohol and remove it.
