Mike--As I read the proofmarks, your gun does not appear as old as you think it is. Unless you have something else (like maybe a serial number list?) telling you it's turn of the century, the proofmarks tell me it's no older than 1925. Guns with both chamber length and shot charge--unless they've undergone reproof, and I see no indication of that on your gun--were proofed under the rules in force from 1925-54.

I guess as a novice 1925 seems like turn of the century to me. Thanks for setting me straight. I really know virtually nothing about old guns in general and this old gun in particular. A nitro proofed Birmingham boxlock in decent working condition should fetch upwards of $500 provided the barrels are sound.

I did see a really clapped out Midland boxlock sell at auction for $250 though. I would have kept bidding but there was a technical glitch haha.

I believe that it may be worth more than $500.00 if the barrels are in proof and if the rest of the gun is sound.
BTW, the crossed swords with the letter "O" above them indicate that the gun was prooved in 1934.

this gun has full coverage engraving...
midland was a prolific maker of good guns...
assuming it is in safe shooting condition, $1000 sounds like a better estimate of its retail value...
put it up for sale here and on gunbroker and see what offers you get...then you will know fur sure...

Thank You Gentlemen. I will poke around on Gunbroker a bit more.
My initial search did not turn anything up. I did fire it and everything works as far as the auto safety, double triggers and extractor.
I may end up putting it on the classifieds here. What types of pictures do folks interested in old shotguns want to see?

My valuation system says as follows.
Midland is Brand Value level three - BV3.
The Original Quality grade appears to be either OQ6.5 if it has ejectors or 7.5 if it is an extractor gun.
The Current Condition level looks to be about level four, CC4 (heavy use, but no abuse).
BV3-OQ6.5-CC4 = $1,500 This is the highest value I think likely.
BV3-OQ7.5-CC6 (shootable, but needs some repairs and/or refinishing) = $550. Lowest value that seems likely.
BTW, thanks for the good photos - they make value estimates much easier and more accurate.
