Nothing could be as fitting for your grandsonny as this:

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=539759872

It practically screams "This is what my cheap prick grandfather bought me to keep me happy, after that guy with the better gun on doublegun told him to stick it". Imagine the hours of fun he will have, wishing it worked, swearing at it, and you, and wishing that he was related to someone higher up the food chain, like, maybe, I don't know, say, Goober from Mayberry.

"Grandpa cheap prick" or "Grandpa skin flint" has a nice ring to it, don't you think?

It the shoe fits....

Ted

Ely VIP Bismuth cartridges are available in UK in 65mm chamber length, felt wads and 32 gm No 4 shot; there are other load / wad combinations too.

I shot some last week through a lightweight 2 1/2" Brummie box lock with no problem at all; certainly not a firecracker load. I didn't shoot anything much beyond 35 yards but with 3/4 choke ducks dropped dead.

If they are available in Canada or the US they might be worth a try.

Eug

Thank you, very kind. Mine's a pint

Similar loads are available in the US as Rio fiber bismuth. Somebody here was trying to get pressure information.

To drop the back and forth on what we should or shouldn't do re lead vs nontoxic shot: Kent does (or did) offer Tungsten Matrix in low pressure 2 1/2" shells for vintage doubles. I think maybe 12ga only. But I have some. Fortunately, being an upland hunter and not a waterfowler, about the only time I have to use nontox is if I'm hunting pheasants in a wetland area and the entire area is nontox, no matter if you're shooting pheasants and not ducks. If I were hunting a lot of federal Waterfowl Production Areas (which are all nontox only) for pheasants, I'd probably need a lot more than I have.

The good thing about TM from a ballistic standpoint: It's the closest in terms of density to lead, of all the nontox alternatives.

Concerning pressure information, if those Rio bismuth loads are marked as CIP-approved FOR STANDARD PROOF GUNS, then they should be good to go in our vintage doubles.

Further on the Kent TM shells I have: They're marked Impact TungstenMatrix on the box. 12ga, 2 1/2", 65MM. Fiber wad. This particular box is 30 gram (1 1/16 oz) loads. The box carries the CIP stamp of approval, and it states that they're good to go in 65/67MM chamber length guns with a proof of 3 tons or 850 bar, which is the CIP standard proof. Shot size is 5. I noted "US" in front of the shot size, which means I either must have measured the pellets or else did a pellet count. Brit 5's are essentially the same size as US 6.

Larry isn't tungsten denser than lead? I hunted with both bismuth (the old Pederson Bismuth Cartridge Company) and tungsten matrix (Kent) shells for waterfowl and found that the tungsten matrix is head and shoulders over the bismuth. Of course it could be the velocity difference between these shells also.

No, Grandpa cheap prick, that would make too much sense for members of your clan. See, the Mossberg would actually WORK, even with the "environmentaly friendly" steel shot you seem to be so enamored with-you can forget that crap with the Boito. It would be perfect for a nice little hunting trip (sluicing turkeys out the pickup window) for you two, except, it likely wouldn't work, anyway. No big deal. That will give you more time to think about my underwear, and post things about it, here.

You went through a lot of the underwear thing with Amarillo Mike, too, didn't you? Have you seen a doctor about this?

Did you contact Gander and try to chisel $100 off the price, just like you did here?

Did he tell you to pack sand? Just like the other guy did, here?

Best,
Ted

Question, how are 3 tons and 850 bar related? Wouldn't 850 bar be more like 6 tons/in^2 ?
