Just to clarify, "best" quality English c. 1830s-1840s MLs usually had Stub Twist. 1850s MLs usually had Laminated Steel or (less commonly) "English 2 Stripe" crolle Damascus. That Laminated Steel barrel material is however
not the "3-Rod English Best Laminated Steel" that was the winner of the Birmingham Proof House Test Trial reported in 1891

Unfortunately, I did not have any Laminated Steel samples to include in the hopefully soon to be published tensile testing performed by METL in 2014, nor could I find any published or advertised tensile strength reports thereof.
