Would a light coat of shellac/varnish work as it does on case coloured receivers?

Here in Michigan Brad Bachelder, a master gunsmith who does a lot of restoration work uses Watco Danish oil. Put it on with a rag, let dry a couple of minutes, and wipe off.

Thank you for all the advice!
I have Brichwood stock wax and I started to put a coat in the barrels. It seems that it no last longer (at the end of the morning it is gone), but maybe I can slow the degradation of the blueing.
Drew, I always thought that bird hunting is an "herditary desease". It seems that you "got sick" in other way!
Here in Central Mexico we have 4 species of quail:
Banded quail
Red brested bobwhite
Moctezuma (Mearns) quail and
Scaled quail
The first two can be hunted in the same habitat in the state of Morelos.
Moctezuma quail is hunted in the mountains in the state of Tlaxcala and Scaled in the semidesert plains in the state of Queretaro and Guanajuato.
I can hunt those birds at no more than 2 hrs. drive from my house in Mexico city.

when Im hunting in warm weather I bring along a 6 pack of the cheap brown cotton jersey work gloves...and change them whenever the ones Im wearing get sweaty....
