Modern mass-produced Merkel like 40e represents poor value for the money. While presentation is poor and external finish is good the internal fit of parts is very poor hand fitting being virtually non-existent. This translates to very user unfriendly gun that is difficult to operate when fist used.
Lowly pre-war Geco 'Ejector' assembled on J.P. Sauer action can be had for percentage of 40e cost and is far, far superior firearm. One gets very good finish, nicely shaped action, wood, checkering and horn butt plate plus pistol grip cap. Where it really beats modern low grade Merkel is how well internal parts plus action to frame are mated. The result of more careful hand fitting is that like new sample from 1930s is very easy to use from the start ie knee is not needed to break open the gun.
