A lot of guys around my gun club are shooting those $700 CZ's made in the Ottoman Empire, and they seem to work well and be a lot of gun for the money.

CZ-USA in my experience is the best built and nicest SxS on the Market for its cost. Allot better than that Marlin L.C. Smith One thing to consider an old used gun as long as you take care of it will go up in value over the years. Not sure if there is a new gun in that price range that will go in value

I saw some of the Marlin LCs in a gun store in Casper, WY. Sure didn't look like $1400 worth to me. Ottoman Empire? Is that PC/BS/code for Turkey? Ditto Dale's suggestion ov a used older gun for $700, if that is your price goal. A Miroku M500 in good shape for $5-700 would be much better gun than $700 worth of camel crap from the "Ottoman Empire", IMO. A Browning BSS, if you can sneak up on one at a proper price, is another good one. You will not get a very good new SxS for $700, from anywhere, again JMO.

Used.
ClapperZapper - I will take all the Webley & Scott 700's you can find me at $2,000. It has to be the whole gun.

not including used guns and why?
The better question here is... Why not a used gun? If cost is an issue...Then a used gun is exactly what you should be looking at. With a little bit of time, and good sense of value, you should easily be able to put yourself into a gun that is in like new condition for close to 1k below new retail prices. Believe me, I recently did just that with the Ugartechea pictured below....And yes, I was able to acquire this gun for much closer to the 1k$ mark than the 2.5k$ that a new one retails for... JRH

I think you'd have to be nuts to buy anything but a decent used gun. I won't own a gun made later than the 50's unless it is a foreign double. For a grand you can pick up many a nice piece. I just bought a Daly 500 Miroku in mint condition (12 ga.) for $375. Double triggers, extractors, slim BT forend and capped pistol grip very nicely checkered. For less than a new piece of junk you can fil the cabinet with beauties made when folks cared about quality. Chops

Many 30yr old guns "used" for hunting haven't seen much use cf. to the use on your average 3yr. old car. Pre-owned really does apply here; not just a gimmick to make you feel less down-at-the-heels. For what I've seen available, hard to beat a used Uggie m-30 or Miroku-Daly for lack of miles on the odometer and prices which are frequently 25% of your number.

Hunting guns get more tear than wear. By this I mean that the outside finish will have suffered from handling, falls, drops, dings and all types of branches hitting and rubbing against the stock. There is almost no chance of wearing a hunting gun out by shooting game. Now if it has been used as a clay target gun that might be a different issue. But how many doubles have you seen on the clay target range by a shooter that was serious about competing or winning? They all have K, B, P, or Kolar guns.
A used double that has only cosmetic problems can be one of the best values. I like pre war German guild guns, Webley 700's, BSA's or some of the guns that were made in Japan in the 60-70's. Many or all will be in your price range if they have cosmetic issues. And for a shooter they are the perfect thing in my book. A solid gun that you do not have to baby and can even shoot in the worst weather.

Here's one that's on Cabela's for <$2K... I thought it looked pretty nice. You will NEVER find a new gun anything like this at this kind of price. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/conten...erarchyId=11651Am I wrong here?

The best SXS for under $2K? A Parker V or G grade, or an LC Smith Field grade. Hands down.
