I have a technical question about the Meriden Hammer doubles. Does the Top lever have a trip to hold it to the right when action is open? My example, the lever returns to center but the gun can be closed and operates properly. Just want to know if it is missing the trip or is normal as is.

Thanks, John

I just check 4 Meriden hammerless guns. One had a catch that held the toplever to the right when the gun was open. The others did not , and each gun closed properly without manipulating the top lever during closing.

Dave and Daryl,

Good to know, I won't tear it apart looking for a non-issue then.

Daryl,

Is Pete M. still collecting ser#'s for the Meriden Fire Arms doubles?

Thank you,

John

Ed,

Google search: "Meriden Hammer gun". Click on "images"

Look at them until you are content.

John;
Your question has been answered but as a general rule if a gun was meant to have a hold over latch it cannot be closed without the lever being to the right. I do not have a Meriden but have doubles both with & without a holdover latch. All those without were built that way & will close properly while none of those with will close if the lever is in the center position, they simply strike the bolt if attempted.

Miller,

My first impression was as you state. Although I do have an Ithaca, Crass that will close with the lever at center and I know it is supposed to have a trip to hold the lever. This board has a wealth of knowledge far beyond any other as regards to Shotguns. Knowing that, I will always ask before I assume. This time it saved me disassembly of a perfectly operating Meriden.

Thanks again to all those that replied.

John
