On the barrel flats are the numbers 750 (date of mfg?). Allan at Allans Armory said that it was made in July 1950.

Thanks!!

Bob:

Welcome aboard.... and nice gun! I have a couple of old Shooters Bibles (1959 & 1960) which have a lot of pictures of Sauer Models and engraving. It might help you to figure out what you have. I no longer have any Sauers, so if you (or any of you other Sauer afficionados) want them, I would be happy to send them along to you. Let me know! I used them to figure out this Sauer:

Great find with your initials and all. I would spread fine layer of Tru-Oil on bare spots, and take that thing wildfowling or turkey huntin' using TMatrix or Bismuth. You might want to invest $5 for camo gun sock to cut down on glare though.
Trying to fix things that aint broken can lead to small disasters (lost or damaged screws,.....).
Looking at the screws it seems like it was not taken apart since proof date, so strip clean & "lube" by pro might be in order though. While he/she services the metal you can take that wood and work on it if you want, but be careful what you use because the wrong stuff might swell the wood so it will not mate the metal on re-assembly.

Bob, if the old finish was shellac, then alcohol will remove it, or move it to the other areas to fill in. If the finish was varnish then varnish remover. Anything that thins a product will remove it, eventually.
I like shellac put on by French Polishing, almost instant gratification.

Also you don't have to take the stock off to do this, if you get any of the finish on the metal you can leave it or use a rag in alcohol and remove it.
