I can think of no gun that is more American than I pump. Although I think (once again) the British developed the first pump, we certainly perfected and popularized it.
I have four Ithaca Model 37's all from the King Ferry era. I visited "the school house" ( the factory was an old school) on many occasions and the plant in Ithaca several times. My first gun, like so many of my contempories, was an Ithaca pump.
I, also, have a Winchester Y-series trap gun. I shoot them all and, although I generally can be seen with a SxS, I still have a great deal of affection for these wonderful guns.
