Last time I looked at the CA regs, you are allowed to retrieve downed game birds that fall on posted land. Can't hunt the posted land, but can go in to recover the game.


That's also the way the law reads in Iowa--except that private land does not have to be posted. You can hunt road ditches (outside of the "safety zone" near buildings occupied by people or animals), and you can cross onto private land without permission to retrieve a bird you shot. But you have to leave your gun behind.
