I need checkering cutter replacement blades. 60's and 90's.
Brownell's and Midway they are unavailable. I usually use Gunline. Please advise as to another source. These things including checkering oil have been hard to get for a long time.
What's with that?
Thank you,
Dale

I just had to wait 3 months for a $200 order worth of replacement cutters directly from Gunline. And they gave me no price break, even though i could get better pricing from brownells, but they didn't have them so i we t direct Gunline never told me that supply would be any sort of issue and i didnt find it out until after i placed my order with them.
Service was horrible and communication was poor, but i did eventually get them.

Gunline is for sale and i am sure that the current owners are aging and just not caring much anymore. They likely will not sell and just shut down.
I do not know any details with dembart, but a lot of their stuff is on backorder with midway usa and brownells too, so i suspect they are on the way out.

Brownells is starting to carry tools from Ullman, but not a very large selection.

It may start getting very hard to get commercial checkering tools in the next couple of years if this continues. It really concerns me.

I have been thinking of biting the bullet and buying a power setup from Hosford.

Well, this is an interesting thread! I have a very good friend that is going to be producing cutters for the Brownell handles. The initial cutters will be single line 75deg, 22LPI, and 24LPI, that's because I need those the most (selfish I know). He said that any of the common spacer sizes would be easy but he just hasn't done them yet.

The spacers are made from A2 steel on a CNC machine and finished using wire EDM and hardened. He also added a nice side benefit in that the cutters are marked on the side with the LPI. That's for us old guys who can't remember. These cutters WILL NOT be cheap - $21 a piece. That is a lot of money for a cutter however since they are very hard I get a least twice the wear from them. The cutters start sharp with no garbage that has to be removed before they are used for the first time and they stay sharp.

I'm not sure if I can mention the supplier or not but I' will say that he manufactures high end single shot rifle actions along with other firearm related products.

Doug

Doug, will these have teeth like a file or gaps between the teeth that can be sharpened? Any ETA on availability?

Hard to get down there ? try getting your hands on them way up here!!! I wouldn't care so much if it was a hobby thing ,but I do this to pay bills ...I tried ordering directly from dem-bart and gave up out of frustration ,just placed a back order from Brownells and waited and waited and waited three months and they're on the way ! thank God for patient customers !

I ordered a couple carbide a while back fantastic by the way , and they can thankfully get a guy out of a jam more often than not

Why not mention this checkering cutter supplier? We have guys who advertise their businesses every time they post via links or their tagline. If I had to guess, I'd guess you are talking about either Martin Hagn or Glenn Sokora. I'd lean toward Martin Hagn since he manufactures more than just high end single shot actions.

Now for my question... where do Europeans get their checkering cutters? I find it hard to believe that the whole world depends upon Dem Bart or Gunline checkering tools. I recall reading about someone who was producing carbide cutters in the Custom and Classic Rifle forum a few years ago, but can't recall who it was.

I can't say about availability but it seems that some Italian guns have metric sized checkering. Perazzis to the best of my measuring are 1mm so 25.4LPI. I suppose other continental guns may be metric as well.

It would be worth a try to contact Marcello Giuliani for info. I've dealt with him in the past and he is exceptional in taking care of business, not to mention some beautiful products.
