I thought it was as simple as taking the gun to a local FFL dealer and having him send it to another licensed FFL holder in California.

"That is if the California FFL guy would not process using a copy of my drivers license."
More and more FFL holders will not receive a gun sent directly to them from an individual. All they really need is a copy of your DL., but many are refusing to accept guns without it coming from an FFL.
Replacement you are spot on. The transfer is straight forward. My tongue in cheek comment was to point out why some are not selling into California after pages of comments and debate on a simple question. " cobbhead was on track he told his son to find a local FFL and he would ship the gun. He asked if there would be any problems. The answer should have been NO. That's the proper way to start.
Cobbhead hope you have already shipped your boy a replacement shotgun so he can put the loss of his gun behind him and start shooting ducks before Christmas.
