the term "transfer" implies some form of transaction...is a gift from one family member to another now considered to be a transaction? i hope not.

geo: sad, if true...what 1968 federal statute are you referring too? if it is the gun control act of 1968, then that only encompasses interstate commercial transactions? here is a reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_Control_Act_of_1968a gift from a father in one state to a son in another state is not a commercial transaction...

Of course it doesn't apply to Cal/Col, but I believe you can transfer long guns across state lines to contiguous states where the states have agreement to do so.
Mike I read yesterday that the contiguous states transfer exemptions all ended in 1986. Of course, you can't believe everything you read on the internet. And I have even gotten conflicting information when asking the same question of different BATF Field Offices. Many FFL Dealers are uninformed and frightened and insist upon erring on the side of caution. How many times have we discussed the problems that often happen with pre-1899 Antique guns? Often, even educating the FFL Dealer and showing them the law is not enough to satisfy them. It shouldn't be this complicated for law abiding U.S. Citizens to exercise their 2nd Amendment Rights. And now we have Obama and all of the Democrat presidential candidates calling for even more restrictions and barriers. Ed, isn't this kind of restriction and regulation of law abiding citizens exactly what you support? This is from Misfires post 407727 -- as for the gun control issue...we are the only country in the world that seems to tolerate mass murder, in the name of an individual right...its about time that we as a society realize that we are over gunned with too many super dangerous weapons in the hands of too many super dangerous people... it is long past time to do as the rest of the civilized world has done and simply, disarm...

how about the gun was given to the son years ago but was left at the fathers house for when he wants to hunt in the state his father lives in ....but now he needs it because of the accident so his father is sending the son, the sons gun.....

You act as though you are happy about it, but over half of your 7564 posts were made there. And quite a few of those posts were to support and defend the crazy legislation that prevents a law abiding father from giving his law abiding adult son a gift of a shotgun. You even went so far as to proclaim that we who cherish and defend our Gun Rights have abandoned Jesus' teaching. The roots I'm comfortable with are the radical---"to get to the root of"---and that's Jesus's teaching. The shame is how far the Christian community has drifted from it. Only the real lawyers on this site should give legal advise and trying to get around gun control issues these days is thin ice territory. When I asked about shipping a gun to my brother in FL my lawyer told me to send it to his gun club which was a FFL, we looked it up. They handled all the paperwork. Does you son belong to a gun club which offers member such a service? As to dealers who decline to sell guns to ca bidders I'm all for it. The fewer bidders the less competition I have for guns that interest me. Maybe we could convince them to exclude 48 other states so I am in the only state allowed to bid on all guns.  Wish they'd hurry up with that because money is running low and there are several guns listed I'd like to buy with no bidding competition.

and the federal gun control act of 1993 also only regulates commercial transactions...
as the gift giving season is now upon us, one wonders if there is any federal statute or ruling that regulates the interstate transportation of firearms as gifts?
if so, then santa could be in big trouble with the feds...
