It seems from your conversation with Mr Ruger a SxS was in the works well back in the 70's but I still believe that fine tuning the Red Label was the way to go. And the Red Label needs some fine tuning. That is improving its pattern throwing by tinkering with the forcing cones or development of choke radius, slicing some pounds off of it, many ways to tinker with the basic O/U. Develop a custom shop where you could order a Red Label that is built to your specs then call it a Black Label. How about a 2 3/4" chambered 20 or 12 gauge, that is light say about 5 3/4lbs or 6 1/3 lbs for some upland game hunting. All the money Ruger throw away tooling up and developing this SxS they could have easily done this and had plenty of sales from Americans that want to buy American. And alot of people love their Red Labels and probably wouldn't mind if a high grade Label would come out.

I looked at four of these ranging in price from $1500 (2nd hand but like new) to $2200. Considering the asking prices I found no issues with any of the ones I examined. I have not come across one in "wood und stahl" for several months now.

My bet is that Ruger is trying to solve the issue of "high" volume production of barrels light enough for the Gold Label. This seems to be the sticking point for light double gun production. Gauge doesn't really matter for this issue. I'm betting they will be back in trumps if they can master barrel making in volume. And, I wouldn't bet against a one piece barrel in the future - machine capabilities and accuracies are getting there.

George, I wasn't implying you were the end of Ruger knowledge. I was more just thinking out loud. I guess I can't argue that Ruger is successful, but, have you priced the stock of late? Lets just say, it isn't what is used to be.

There are problems in Mudville. I can't help but wonder, if they were after a "traditionalist" market with the Gold Label, why didn't they ask any of us how to get some of our money? All they had to do was ask, and I would have told them exactly how to get some of my money. I would have bought the gun and some stock if I thought they had a clue.

But, they didn't. Ask, or get any of my money.

I took my Gold Label out this week and had wonderful results on targets. For me the gun simply works well. I will try it again this weekend at a preserve with a dog training group. No gun will please everyone but I think many people wouold really appreciate the Gold Label if given an opportunity to try it.

I don't think Ruger has the ability right now to have a Gold Label in anything but the 12 gauge. From what I have always taken in, they are having enough problems just keeping the 12 gauge project afloat. For them to undertake another project and retool for different gauges would seem to be out of the realm of possibility. I think they should perfect the gun at hand before they take on any other projects with it.

I think that Rocketman is probably right. It's my understanding that the Gold Label barrel making process is very hands-on labor intensive. I personally would like to see them succeed.
